2 DOIs resolving to the same page owned by Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health)

Dear Crossref,

I found a landing page that resolves via 2 DOIs:

  • DOI1: https://0-doi-org.libus.csd.mu.edu/10.1097/00000539-200108000-00034
  • DOI2: https://0-doi-org.libus.csd.mu.edu/10.1213/00000539-200108000-00034

This landing page shows DOI2.
PubPeer has an entry for DOI2 and no entry for DOI1.
The Retraction Watch DB has an entry for DOI2 and no entry for DOI1.

Should the publisher Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health) discard DOI1?

Itā€™s a little unclear, but based on the registration dates and the retraction date, it looks like 10.1097/00000539-200108000-00034 is the DOI for the original article, and 10.1213/00000539-200108000-00034 is the DOI for the retraction notice.

I will ask Ovid/Wolters Kluwer for clarification on this. If thatā€™s the case, Iā€™ll advise them to update the DOIsā€™ metadata to make the relationship between the two more transparent, and to set 10.1213/00000539-200108000-00034 to resolve to a valid landing page for the retraction notice in particular, rather than to the articleā€™s landing page.

Thereā€™s no way to actually discard a DOI. If, both 10.1213/00000539-200108000-00034 and 10.1097/00000539-200108000-00034 are intended to refer to the article itself, they could alias them. But, in that case, weā€™d advise that they continue using 10.1097/00000539-200108000-00034 as the primary DOI because it was the one created first (many years prior to the other), and therefore it has had more time to accrue citations (26 compared to 2, in our system) and generally be distributed more broadly.
