Crossref vs Bibiliographic databases

Dear all

It would be of great value if any of you could refer us to the answers (your views / relevant study / journal paper / blog postings) to the following questions - 1) is there any study for comparison of metadata coverage of Crossref and other bibliographic databases (like Scopus, WoS from commercial domain or Dimensions, SemanticScholar from open access domain)? 2) is it safe to assume that Crossref coverage of metadata (retrieved against a REST/API query - say query.affiliation) will be more comprehensive (and all-encompassing) in comparison to the coverage of retrieved metadata from any of the mentioned bibliographic databases individually?

Regards

Hi!

Here is very good publication
Martijn Visser, Nees Jan van Eck, Ludo Waltman; Large-scale comparison of bibliographic data sources: Scopus, Web of Science, Dimensions, Crossref, and Microsoft Academic. Quantitative Science Studies 2021; 2 (1): 20–41. doi: https://0-doi-org.libus.csd.mu.edu/10.1162/qss_a_00112

Hello @psmku,

As @AlexeySkalaban mentioned, this article Large-scale comparison of bibliographic data sources: Scopus, Web of Science, Dimensions, Crossref, and Microsoft Academic | Quantitative Science Studies | MIT Press and it’s references is a great place to start.

The page in our education documentation which explains about “what’s required” might also help but this obviously does depend on what our members send us.

I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Paul
