Persistent identifier systems are crucial parts of the global scholarly infrastructure, they facilitate the creation, management, and maintenance of open metadata for scholarly resources, and support open and FAIR research practices. On top of the descriptive metadata, the connection metadata PIDs host can provide rich insights into complex concepts and processes, such as the productivity and achievement of a researcher, the entire lifecycle of a research project, even the progress and impact of a research domain. Creating complete and high-quality connection metadata both relies on and benefits each stakeholder group in the research ecosystem.
